The continued absence of a recovery of the world economy and fear of terror and war characterized the whole business environment in 2002. On top of all this, the fall of the dollar against the euro impacted negatively on the turnovers of exporting companies. Nevertheless, GKD – Gebr. Kufferath AG, based in Düren, Germany, can look back in satisfaction at the way business developed last year. After 2001, already a difficult year for business, the owner-run enterprise, in expectation of an insecure world economy in 2002, had planned to maintain its turnover at a consistently high level. This target was just about reached: 520 employees generated a turnover of 47.3 million euro throughout the group in the last business year, as against 50.2 million euro with 580 employees in 2001. 40 percent of this 5.8 percent drop in turnover was due to the rising value of the euro. As manufacturers of high-quality woven wire meshes made of stainless steel or other technical wires and fibers, the non-listed joint stock company with over 75 years of business tradition has a position as the international market leader to defend.
